About this talk

The workforce development field has a tradition of looking for people’s barriers to employment before we look for their employment assets and strengths. Some of this approach comes from our funding sources requiring that we document what is wrong with people in order to justify serving them. It also comes from the practice of seeing people as individuals that need our help instead of seeing people through the lens of the positive strengths they bring to the employment process. When we use this barriers first approach, we and our job seekers inadvertently end up seeing people as a collection of barriers that make them unemployable. This perspective in itself is a barrier to employment. If you can’t believe in the employment potential of the people you serve, you can’t help them believe in it either.

Many of the people we serve have been oppressed, traumatized, faced poverty and discrimination and suffered through long periods of unemployment that have damaged their ability to see themselves being successful in the world of work. Our job is to help them dig beneath the surface of their barriers and uncover the hidden rest of the iceberg of their assets and strengths. Once people start to realize that they are more than their challenges, they can believe in their employability and find the strength and sense of purpose to want to make progress in their lives. This increases employment motivation which gives people a reason to eliminate the barriers and obstacles that are in the way of becoming successfully employed.

You need a new set of skills and tools to get at the rest of the iceberg. This session is packed with ideas and strategies that will help you learn where to look for the positive attributes that will help you work from a strengths and assets based approach. These new concepts can be made to work for any population of customers.
